Located on the western shore of the island of Islay, on the shores of Loch Indaal, just a short distance from the village of Port Charlotte and the Bowmore Distillery, Bruichladdich is undoubtedly the most distinctive distillery among its Islay counterparts.

John, Robert and William Harvey founded the distillery in 1881, using the inheritance left by their father, one of Glasgow's most renowned distillers, to build what was then the most modern distillery of its time. The project immediately demonstrated its pioneering and innovative nature, beginning with the construction materials: an experimental concrete made from beach pebbles and cavity wall construction was used. The Harvey family continued distilling whisky at Bruichladdich until 1929, when the distillery closed for the first time.

In 1938, the distillery was sold to Hatim Attari, Joseph W. Hobbs and Alexander W. Tolmie, who managed it until 1952, when it was taken over by Ross & Coulter Ltd.. In 1960, A.B. Grant acquired the distillery, doubling production and bringing Bruichladdich's annual output to around one million litres. In 1968, Invergordon Distillers purchased the distillery and further expanded production in 1975 by increasing the number of stills from two to four, raising annual capacity to approximately 1.5 million litres. In 1993, Invergordon Distillers was acquired by White & Mackay, and Bruichladdich was closed two years later.

In 2000, a group of private investors led by Murray McDavid (an independent bottler) invested nearly €8 million to purchase the distillery along with a stock of 7,000 casks. Jim McEwan (formerly of Bowmore) was appointed Master Distiller and Production Director. Following an extensive restoration programme in 2001—during which most of the original Victorian-era equipment was carefully restored—the distillery resumed production. In 2003, its own bottling line was installed. Today, all Bruichladdich production is dedicated to creating non-chill filtered single malts with no added colouring, using exclusively Scottish, organically grown barley.

Interesting Fact: The distillery produces three distinct styles of single malt: the lightly peated Bruichladdich; the heavily peated Port Charlotte, peated to around 40 ppm and named in honour of the nearby distillery that closed in 1929; and Octomore, one of the most heavily peated whiskies in the world (over 100 ppm), named after an Islay distillery that closed in 1854.
